AIA WYOMING CELEBRATES 70 YEARS AS A CHAPTER OF THE AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF ARCHITECTS - JOIN US IN THE CELEBRATION!

A Pioneer spirit influences architecture throughout the vast western US but it is in Wyoming – the least populous state in the union - that this word has a singular power that persists. The challenge of creating habitable, collective places in the wilderness – from encircling wagons for protection, to the frontier towns and ranch compounds, the need for community – taken for granted in dense urban contexts, is an essential part of humankind since the beginning of time. We come together for commerce and social interactions. In relatively newly settled Wyoming, this is an ongoing process into the 21st century.

The time lapse of progress rooted in isolation and vastness of this majestic land has preserved an authenticity in the indigenous structures found throughout Wyoming and the west. These buildings are indeed modern in their uncompromised functional utility. They are a point of reference for a new kind of architecture that meaningfully connects the present with the past. Instead of capitulating to “pioneer nostalgia”, Wyoming and the west is a “frontier for new ideas”. We seek to create an architecture true to the needs of program, inspired by the phenomena of nature, utilizing technology to make buildings that connect experientially to the landscape. This is architecture relating to context not by imitation but by understanding the pioneer spirit.
